Abstract:

Kept while naturalist and artist on Charles Wilkes' U.S. exploring expedition to the South Seas. Occasional drawings included. Journals 1 and 2 cover voyage from Norfolk, Va. to the South Pacific. Journal, Sept. 22, 1841-Feb. 19, 1842 (filmed out of order) describes trek through Oregon and California, with comments on flora and fauna, topography, settlers and settlements, etc. Brief entries after departure from San Francisco to arrival in Singapore. Journal, Jan. 1-July 18, 1841, describes the Pacific Ocean voyage (stopping at numerous islands) and voyage to Oregon.
